Ingredients

1 cup rice (sona masoori/ basmati/ jasmine)

3/4 to 1 cup moong dal (split green lentil)

1/2 teaspoon shahijeera

1 inch cinnamon piece, 1 bay leaf

4 cardamoms

10 to 12 kababchini

2 medium sized green chillies

10 curry leaves

1/2 cup onions

2 cups chopped mixed vegetables (carrot, beans,potatoes & green peas)

2 tablespoons chopped mint leaves

2 tablespoons chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves

1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste

2 tablespoons oil

Salt as per taste

1/2 tablespoon turmeric

4 cups water

Cooking Procedure

1. Wash rice and moong dal together and soak in water for 15 - 20 mins.2. In a saucepan heat the oil on a medium heat, add the whole garam masala (shahijeera, cardamom, cinnamon, kababchini and bay leaves).3. When they start to crack, add the curry leaves, green chili and onions.4. Fry the onions on the medium heat till they turn light brown. Simmer the gas, add the gingergarlic paste and turmeric, fry for 30 secs.5. Add the chopped vegetables, mint and coriander leaves and cook for 2 mins.6. Add 4 cups water and salt. Bring it to a boil on a medium high heat.7. Add the soaked rice and dal mixture and again bring it to a boil.8. Reduce the heat to medium low.  When the rice is half done keep the lid on and cook till the water evaporates and rice and dal are done. 9. Serve hot with tomato rasam/ bhoondi raita/ onion raita.
